HOW IT
ALL WORKS
As
the media travels through the magnetic field created by a
degausser, each particles’ polarity is changing from north to
south 60 times per second. As the media leaves the magnetic
field, the particles are left in a random polarization.
Complete media erasure is said to be achieved when the magnetic
particles’ polarities are evenly distributed in opposite
polarities. That is, 50% of the particles have a positive
polarity and 50% of the particles have a negative polarity,
creating a net magnetization of zero. This result is achieved by
rotating the media through the degaussing field and then slowly
removing.
If no rotation takes place, only
two areas of the media will be parallel to the magnetic lines of
flux. These two points will be 180 degrees of each other and at
opposite ends of the media. The least amount of erasure will
occur in between the 0 and 180 degree points at 90 and 270
degrees. By rotating the media 90 degrees on a second pass, the
portions of the media at the 90 and 270 degree points will be at
the 0 and 180 degree points.
